Welcome to the Arizona Hydrological Society’s 18th Annual Symposium, once again held in Flagstaff, Arizona. Our mild fall climate and beautiful setting at the base of the San Francisco Peaks offers a scenic, casual setting and welcome relief from the summer heat of the southern valleys of Arizona. We hope you can take some time during and after the symposium to enjoy all that the community of Flagstaff — and its surrounding forests, national parks, and national monuments — has to offer.

The theme for this year’s symposium, “Conservation and Innovation in Water Management,” addresses some of the most important issues that southwest water professionals face today. With a full day devoted to the Conservation & Innovation Forum, we see this as a rare opportunity for regional and local water experts to share their knowledge about the use of innovative strategies to conserve and manage water. This timely topic is sure to interest attendees as the State of Arizona continues to plan for the best use of its water now and into the future.

We hope the 2005 Symposium will feed your enthusiasm for AHS, provide you with the opportunity to develop new partnerships and expand continuing ones, and to deepen your understanding and appreciation of Arizona’s most precious resource — water.

As an added bonus this year, the AHS Symposium overlaps with the Flagstaff Festival of Science. This 10-day event kicks off on Saturday, September 24, with Science in the Park at Wheeler Park, where AHS will host a booth. The Festival of Science, one of the premier events of its kind in the country, is a family-oriented festival that includes open houses, lectures, in-school presentations, hikes, excursions, and hands-on activities. It’s designed to provide everyone — especially children — an opportunity to experience the kinds of science that surround them every day and to learn how science can represent an opportunity in their own lives.

On behalf of the entire 2005 Planning Committee, thanks to all of you for attending the 18th Annual Symposium. It has been a pleasure organizing this event for you. We look forward not only to seeing you at chapter meetings in the coming year but also at the 19th Annual Symposium in 2006.

Sincerely,

The 2005 Symposium Executive Committee
